Pinnacle vs. Ante Up out of Chicago
The tough play of Pinnacle’s goaltender, Stowell, carried over to the Division 1 championship game, as he came out with big saves in tight. But the Pinnacle offense ran into one tough defense in Ante Up, a team made of players from the Chicago area.
Quadear Mike continued to impress in the championship game, hustling in the midfield, scrapping it up for ground balls. He plays with heart, much like everyone, who seemed to be taking this tournament very seriously, making it enjoyable to watch.
Ante Up attackman Jake Mann, who has committed to Lafayette, was very impressive in the championship. He hustles, has good size, good vision, and has a knack for scoring, which he did early in the game. He and senior Ian Smith (Libertyville, Ill.) worked well together. Both, like most of the Ante Up team, seemed to be quite tough and in good shape. They could run all day. Smith was stuffed by Stowell early on, but he later drove the alley and scored on a bounce shot to make it 2-0.
Ante Up took a 3-0 lead to start the second half on a score from Mann, who isolated up top and let a big crank rip, putting it over Stowell’s right shoulder. Ante Up was up 4-0 before Pinnacle finally created offense when Ethan Thompson scored on a feed from Pat Tierney. Tierney came right back with another quick goal to make it 4-2.
Late in the game, Stowell came up big again with a great save on an Ante Up longpole and another huge stuff, stopping senior middie Hunter Rich in close.
But then it was Mann who scored again to make it 5-3 with little time left in the game.
The Ante Up defense was made up of senior longpoles Joe Simenolli, Garrett Van Schaick, Quinn Regan and James McKenzie, who all appeared to be well coached, constantly communicating and all playing physically. My first impression of the Ante Up defense was that it was one of the larger, most definitely taller, defenses I saw at the tournament. But they were also very tough and worked very hard against Pinnacle. It helped that both Ante Up goalies, senior Eddie Coyle in the first half and senior Josh Kohlman in the second, were solid. Ante Up was a very well-coached team.
